Villa
Gaia is located 39 miles from Grosseto, 39 miles south of Siena,
127 miles north of Rome, 12.5 miles from the peak of Mt. Amiata,
and just around the corner from Pescina. It is also located in
the little province of Grosseto. The territory is approximately
31 square miles and its surface is characterized by the presence
of olive trees, which represents one of the greatest economic
resources in the country. The city of Seggiano is located on a
little hill and only has 1,015 inhabitants, which are called "Seggianési".
Between the olive trees (Seggiano’s variety is called “olivastra
di seggiano”) and the little cities you can see the Madonna
della Carita Sanctuary, which is an unusual Amiata monument. In
fact it came from a Senese complex architecture of 16th century
manneristic style. Construction began in 1588, but because of
some devastating consequences the completion wasn’t until
probably 1603. The outside, with a complex and rich façade and a
cupola in brick divided in four segments is especially
evocative. Closer to the center of town, there is also a little
church dedicated to St Rocco, built in 1486. Inside you will
find a fresco with the signatures of soldiers of distant times;
vandalism that with time gained a certain historical value.
Facing a neo-gothic palace there is parochial church dedicated
to St Bartolommeo. Originally built in the Middle Ages, it was
renovated in 1930.
A
painting of the Virgin, pregnant with Child can be found inside
as well as a painting by Bartolomeo Bulgarini dedicated to St.
Bartolommeo, St. Michele and Giovanni Evangelista.
There is also Corpus Dominions church, dedicated to St
Bernardino from Siena in XIV century. Of particular interest is
the Madonna with Child and a relic of Saint Bernardino from
Siena.
From a little street in Seggiano it is possible to see a
splendid panorama: the color, the little cities, the beautiful
Amiata Mountain, and the Potentino Castle, through the land of
olive trees.
The Castle is encircled by fields and is closed to visitors. A
little farther ahead you will find the ruins of Colombaio’s
Convent.

To visit:
• Two Doors of access and the old town-wall, although not easy
to find.
• CHURCH OF SAINT BERNARDINO of Romanesque origin is found in
the higher part of the country and contains the relic of the
saint.
• SAINT ROCCO CRYPT, small oratory erected in 1468; knew for the
graffiti lived in the wartime from the soldiers.
Just outside from city the SANCTUARY of the MADONNA of the
CARITA' constructed in XVI century after a catastrophic scarcity;
perfectly recognizable for the red steeple and the precious
paint on the facade which is of late-manneristic style
The POTENTINO CASTLE is a fortified palace with towers; it was
building in 14th century.
